(Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress)
SPARCS is a 16-week program for youth ages to 10 to 17 who have experienced some kind of trauma or chronic stress in their lives. Typically, this might include physical or sexual abuse, domestic violence, chronic poverty, homelessness, the death of a parent, removal from their home, or many other stressful and traumatic experiences for youth.
Children and youth who have experienced chronic stress or trauma typically exhibit significant behavioral challenges, such as anger management problems, self-destructive behaviors, challenges maintaining trusting relationships and they report feeling hopeless and pessimistic about the future. Ultimately, these adolescents have an increased risk of behaviors and actions that may lead them to interactions with the juvenile justice system and/or more intensive mental health interventions.
The SPARCS model is a nationally recognized, evidenced-informed group therapy process. The sessions focus on equipping participants with fun and practical tools that adolescents can use to manage their stress and emotions and learn improved coping skills. Therapists focus on the “Four Cs” of cultivating awareness, coping more effectively, connecting with others and creating meaning and purpose.
SIRSS is able to provide SPARCS thanks to a collaboration with the Youth Network Council (YNC), and its partner the Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition (ICTC).
How to access services
As with all SIRSS services, the first step to participating in a SPARCS group is an assessment, scheduled through the phone number listed below. If a disorder is diagnosed, treatment is a partnership between the youth (under age 18), family and counselor that builds on strengths and addresses needs.
