What would this community do without SIRSS?

"When I was on the Board of Directors of Southern Illinois Regional Social Services (SIRSS) funding was always a problem.  Services to local citizens were threatened every year because treatment for people with mental illness and substance abuse disorders is not well-funded” says Gordon Plumb, Ph.D. “People with limited resources need help.  SIRSS has always been there when needed.”

Friends of SIRSS (FOS) was founded as a private not-for-profit, 501(c)3 corporation in 1996 for the purpose of supplementing the typical funding sources of Southern Illinois Regional Social Services, Inc.

The mission of Friends of SIRSS is to promote the financial stability and growth of SIRSS so that the mental health needs of individuals in the region continue to be met consistently and effectively.  FOS is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, chaired by Chris Cutler.

Trivia Night

Friends of SIRSS held Trivia Night, February 9, 2008 at the Newman Catholic Student Center in Carbondale. Thirty-two tables with eight players at each table participated in the event. The voice of Saluki Basketball Steve Falat was the master of ceremonies. Table participants purchased pizza from Mugsy's and/or brought in their own refreshments. Ben Briggs was team captain of the table winning first prize at Trivia.

Friends of SIRSS thanks the following organizations, businesses and individuals for their support: Booby's Submarine Sandwhiches, Bojer's Coffee, Larry and Marlene Dietz, Steve Falat, McDonald's/Short Enterprises, Murdale True Value, Newman Catholic Student Center, Old National Bank, Gordon Plumb, Daelia Ayers, Thara Lowndes, Chris and Patricia Rutter, Vogler Ford Motor Company and Walmart.  Everyone’s combined effort netted over $5,000!

Family Volunteers for SIRSS Trivia Night

Dr. Gordon Plumb, a Carbondale psychologist who knows first-hand that treatment makes all the difference for people with behavioral health issues, has been a friend to Southern Illinois Regional Social Services (SIRSS) for many years.  Dr. Plumb has served as a volunteer on the SIRSS Board and the Friends of SIRSS Board, giving his energy and expertise freely toward Building Better Lives for persons with the fewest resources.

His enthusiasm and commitment have spread to his family.  Daughters Daelia Ayers and Thara Lowndes and their spouses worked with Plumb on Trivia Night to benefit SIRSS.

Volunteer efforts by committed community volunteers like Gordon Plumb and his daughters – and by people like Steve Falat and area business leadersare very important to our friends and neighbors who need help and don’t know where to turn.  They are vital in fulfilling the SIRSS promise: “You are not alone.  We care.  We know how to help.”
